welcome to Whispering Pines Sanatorium.

The sanatorium itself and its environs sits nestled atop a cliff overlooking a lake over which seems to hang an everlasting mist, day or night. The technology present seems to be equivalent to Earth, circa the 1960's to 1970's.
Nicknamed "The Dead House", Whispering Pines Sanatorium is home to an unfortunate group of people who seem to all be afflicted with the same mental disorder: Identity Displacement Disorder. These sad individuals believe themselves to be from another time and place, sometimes an entirely different planet, and many also believe themselves to be possessed of certain supernatural abilities. No therapy has proven effective or treatment regimen has influenced the progression of the disorder, and thus Whispering Pines was founded by the talented and benevolent Dr. Chastin Pogue as a safe haven for this stricken people to live out their lives without unduly harming themselves or others.
At least that's what it says on the tin.

where things aren't what they seem.
The orderlies and other employees at the Sanatorium often refer to the hospital as "the Dead House" because once patients arrive, they never leave. Sometimes they disappear, and some say they were spirited away across the mist-shrouded lake to the 'Asylum'. Some have returned from there, and all who do return changed.
Sometimes, when walking the halls or entering empty rooms, patients have reported seeing figures out of the corners of their eyes, hearing sobbings coming from unoccupied rooms, or even felt a hand on their shoulder or at the small of their backs. The employees have never reported anything of the like, but then again, they seem to see things, including the patients, a little differently than they see each other.
And then there's the matter of the medical bracelet that allows you to communicate with the other patients regardless of location. The employees don't seem to notice that communicator is anything more than a medical accessory. Oh, and there's the chest at the foot of your bed with much more space than it should have, that only opens to your touch...things just don't add up about the hospital or its stated purpose.
For more on the patient rooms and their environs, as well as the cafeteria schedule, see the housing page.

the yard.
"The Yard", accessible via double doors at the bottom of stairwells from the second floor, is actually several acres of grassy knolls, a small wooded area, tennis courts, outdoor seating and tables, a walking or running track, a baseball field, and several smaller buildings for use by patients for...well, whatever they might want to use them for.
the Woodshed
Situated near the wooded area toward the back of the Yard is the Woodshed. A bit of a misnomer, this building houses a workshop with several tools for carving wood, both by hand or mechanically, a store of wood, and outback, a place to chop more of it. In a locked room inside there are various landscaping tools as well, as all the facilities in the Dead House are maintained by the patients, though the tool shed does have to be opened by an employee. The woodshed is also used for storage for various sports accessories such as croquet mallots, sports balls, and the like.
Note: by participating in jobs such as those listed on the jobs page, characters can earn 'credits'. These are, OOC, a trust system sort of currency characters can exchange with one of the orderlies for small luxury items. More information on that can be found on the Jobs page.
